What to check before your next CNC equipment purchase

A new machine tool is a big commitment, and the sales conversation is built around the headline numbers: spindle speed, axis travel, tool changer capacity. Before signing anything, it's worth checking a few things the brochure won't tell you.
- What you'll actually run on it day to day. Headline capability matters less than whether the machine suits the parts you make most often. A machine bought for its ceiling gets used at its floor most of the time.
- Space, power and foundation requirements. Larger or higher-spindle machines often need more than floor space: three-phase supply, air quality, sometimes a reinforced foundation. Confirm this before delivery day, not after.
- Local service, spares and support. A machine is only as good as how quickly it gets fixed when something goes wrong. Check who actually services it in your area, not just who sold it to you.
- What it takes to train people on it. A new control or programming method has a learning curve. Factor that time in, especially if it's a different brand or interface to what your operators already know.
- The full cost, not just the quote. Tooling, fixturing, commissioning and any facility work rarely show up on the headline price, but they're real costs of getting the machine actually cutting parts.
The right machine for your shop is rarely just the one with the biggest spec sheet. It's the one that fits how you actually work.
