Common CNC process bottlenecks we see on the shop floor

12 August 2026

Most CNC shops aren't held back by their machines. They're held back by the process around the machines. A few bottlenecks come up again and again.

  1. Long, unplanned changeovers. If changing jobs takes far longer than the cutting itself, the machine is losing money while it sits idle between parts.
  2. No reliable way to get a proven program back on the machine. When a program that worked last time has to be rebuilt or re-proved from scratch, that's lost time a simple, standard way of storing and calling it up would avoid.
  3. One person holding all the process knowledge. If only one operator knows how to set up a particular job, the whole schedule depends on that person being available.
  4. Programs and parameters that haven't been revisited in years. Speeds, feeds and cycle times set when a job was first programmed often stay unchanged long after the tooling, or the machine, has moved on.
  5. Programming and the shop floor working from different information. When the person writing the program and the person running it aren't looking at the same drawing, tolerances or material, mistakes creep in that have nothing to do with skill.

Most of these cost nothing to fix beyond time and a willingness to look honestly at how work actually moves through the shop.

Get in touch if you'd like to talk through how this applies to your operation.
